CASE STUDY 02
the snug that needed
A WAY OUT
A 3-sided feature stove in a flat-roof extension
KENILWORTH – Warwickshire
PROJECT focus
Multi-team collaboration · Complex flue routing · Flat-roof penetration
THE CLIENT
a modernised 1970s bungalow — kenilworth
The clients were mid-way through a significant renovation — converting a dormer attic and extending with a large flat-roof addition. They had a clear vision for the new snug: a 3-sided stove on a pedestal, framed by a garden view, creating a genuinely cosy retreat within the wider open-plan space. The challenge was routing a compliant flue out of an extension that had no direct path to the sky.
OUR APPROACH
early collaboration
We joined the project early, meeting the builder on site to agree flue positions before walls and ceilings were finished — avoiding costly remedial work later.
flue planning
Carefully calculated the route to divert the chimney back to the main building once outside, using shallow bends above the stove to stay within the 4-bend building regs limit.
staged installation
Worked in phases alongside the build team — marking positions, preparing roof timbers, then returning once floors were in to fit the hearth, stove and final pipework.
INSTALLATION DETAIL
SHALLOW BENDS
Minimal-angle bends above stove used all 4 permitted bends — maximising stove proximity to wall
FLAT ROOF PENETRATION
Upstand and lead flashing installed — fully weatherproof roof exit with no risk of leaks
MULTI-TRADE TEAM WORK
Carpentry team pre-spaced roof timbers wider than standard to allow safe hot-flue passage
CERTIFICATION
Full HETAS certification filed digitally — compliance certificates delivered instantly by email

THE OUTCOME
the result
A curved, 3-sided glass stove on a pedestal — genuinely tidy and well worth every bit of the planning effort. The black pipework sat beautifully against the white render, and the clients had the cosy, light-filled garden retreat they had envisioned from the very start of the project.
WHY WE WORK THIS WAY
